Mesothelioma or malignant mesothelioma, to be more precise is a very rare and dreaded form of cancer. It develops from the transformation of the cells which originate in the protective lining which covers most of the internal organs of our body and is known as mesothelium. The most usual cause of mesothelioma is exposer to asbestos.
The most usual or common site of the occurrence of mesothelioma is pleura (outer lining of the internal chest wall and lungs),but sometimes it can affect the abdominal cavities outer lining known as peritoneum and pericardium which forms the sac outside the heart, or the sac that s around the testis known as vaginalis.
Most of the people affectes with mesothelioma have either worked in those places where they inhaled esbestos, or exposed to asbestos fiber or dust in some way or the other. It is been suggested that a person who washes the clothes of that person who was in association with asbestos were at risk of developing mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is not to be associated with smoking like that of lung cancer, but at the same point smoking can increase the risk of other cancers which are associated with asbestos.
The symptoms and signs of mesothelioma are chest pain, shortness in breathing, unexpected weight loss. But these symptoms might just not appear until 20 to 45 years or sometimes more after actually being exposed to asbestos. Mesothelioma doesn’t usually spread to the brain, adrenal glands or bones. The pleural tumors most of the times occur only on 1 side of the lungs. In severe mesothelioma cases where a person can have more than one tumor and may even develop pneumothorax or you can even say the lung collapses. It may even spread or metastasize to the other body parts.
As the prognosis are still very disappointing for malignant mesothelioma, there have been is given in early stage, is has a better result but at the same time the cure rate is very rare. The age and the health statues of the patient also suggests the result of the therapy. It is been studied that the result of epithelioid histology responds in a much better way and increases the chances of survival over sarcomatoid histology. Other then this surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, heated intraoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy, multimodality therapy are some of the therapies used to cure mesothelioma around the world.
